Boss's pickup

One of the work trucks shelled a rear end. POS was hugging 275K miles. A 98 4wd. My truck will be handed down and I am looking at the Ecoboost F150. Any one out there getting close to the 22mpg I hear rumors of?

22MPG may be attainable with an empty cargo area, but I'm guessing you will have it loaded with tools/equipment most of the time.

Agree with Kwired. Also I believe the MPG advertised is based on a track test and that is the highest MPG test result. It is not average test result. I would figure about 10-15% less MPG than what is advertised.

I just bought a new F-150. My wife does a lot of research when we have to put out a lot of money. :) Consumer Report says to stay away from the ECO boost. Can't remember why. I average 17 mpg in the truck. I guess that's respectable for a full size pickup. However, (there's always a however in life), I don't carry tools, material or tow.
Good luck!

The gas mileage for an F-150 with an Ecoboost (twin turbo V6) is about the same as one with the big V8. Ecoboosts' claim to fame is that it has more low end torque rivaling a diesel, which is good if your are towing or hauling. Realistically expect 10-18 mpg depending on how you drive.

Tool pouch, small tool box, meters and misc small stuff will be the load for most part. Getting old, fat and lazy in no particular order.

The one my better half preferred was a Tacoma.

If you're thinking of a Tacoma you can get a Tundra built to the same standard for ~ $1500. more. There's very little adder going from a Tacoma to a Tundra for a lot more truck. The Toyota V6 and both V8's all get around the same mileage. Don't get the small V8, it's a dog and gas hog. The big V8 (5.7L ?) comes with the six speed auto trans, big rear end, and a standard tow package, great adder and same or better mileage compared to the V6.

Toyota makes a stripped work truck, white pickup, with the big V8 and nothing else, last I looked ~ $20K. If you're driving in the snow, add the SR5 package, 4WD, and extra cab ... with discounts that truck goes 4 to 6 K off list, August and December have the best promo money. Rock solid and comfortable, 17 mpg all the time, 14 mpg towing a small trailer and bed load at 80 on the highway.

The one my better half preferred was a Tacoma.

I had a 2007 standard cab manual transmission two-wheel drive with the four cylinder - for a little truck, it was peppy and I loved cruise with the manual transmission. 27 MPG empty.

I now have a 2006 extended cab, auto transmission, 2WD four cylinder. I get 20-23 MPG empty and I generally cancel cruise when I hit a hill, because the stinkin' thing downshifts from 4th or 5th to 2nd gear without really trying to milk the velocity out of top gear.

Anyway, I love the Tacomas and think they're a smart buy depending on your needs.

A good friend of mine has the Tundra SR5 with the TRD 4x4 package 5.7 super charged and all 598hp and gets still around 18mpg unloaded and 14 pulling his 34 foot camper, he upgraded from his first Tundra because it didn't have enough power to pull the camper up hill or should I say at HWY speeds, and with the V6 he only got 7 MPG pulling the camper because he had to floor it so much.

But the price tag with all the options he had was steep, over $50k but it was decked out.

With the TRD package he got over sized suspension hydro boost braking Detroit style locking axles, much larger load range E tires, he let me drive it for work while my car was getting some recall repairs (2010 Corolla), and I couldn't believe how much power it had, I loved the way it handled he said he had the Allison trany option and you could feel it shift 7 times when it goes into over drive and when you use cruse control it engine brakes to maintain speed on down hills.

Now if Toyota would come out with a full sized work van with the options that this tundra had I would buy it in a heart beat, I drove a Nissan 3/4 ton HD van it got very bad millage and corner roll was bad, felt like I was driving a boat, guess I was used to my 2005 Express 3/4 ton with the anti roll system they used

17 MPG

17 MPG

I just moved from a 2009 F-150 FX4 with the 5.4 liter V8 to same truck in a 2013 with the smaller Ecoboost. The 5.4 consistently averaged 16 mpg for the entire 80,000 miles I put on it and after 6,000 miles on the Ecoboost it is averaging 16.9! That is unloaded, on flat land, mostly interstate driving at around 70 mph, for most of the 50 miles per day I have been driving the last few months. Even going 55 mph on flat roads I could never get 22 mph on the computer. Great trucks though......

Tried a dodge ram 1500 with 8 cyl hemi along with the ford f150 eco boost. The Ram had an 8 speed auto. The instant mpg showed 22 @ 75 mph, 24-25 @ 55 mph. The ford had more of a graphic display, operater error i am sure, but it appeared to be a bit less. I drove both the same route, about 25 miles.
