Are we ok surface mount a 4 square steel box through sheet rock into a wall stud, then bring a wire into the box from a knock out in the back of box ?

not sure if there are firewall considerations but as long as you are using correct fittings etc...yep.

If box is secured to the framing members this can be done. But why a 4sq? If this space is finished (suggested by presence of sheet rock) I would be using a "Wiremold" box. Designed for rear entry and a finished look.

You should have no issue but a recessed box fastened to the side of a stud would look a lot better. Get a gangable 3 1/2" deep box if you need more gangs.
