Could someone help me find the distance required that a box pass through the foam/stucco/mud to meet code. The inspector (new guy) is requiring that the box pass through the foam .25".. until this inspection, boxes had to be at least .25 from the surface of the foam to flush.. be it 3/4" to 1.5" in thickness the box had to be .25 from surface. He insists that if it doesn't pass through the foam the stucco will crack. Any help would be Thanks All.

I am aware of 314.20 but the op is talking about a code on stucco. I thought the op was saying his box was set 1/4" back and the inspector would not accept it. They also make box extenders but I don't think that is what the op is asking.

Seems to me that you've gotten someone who is trying to make a point of who's boss! 312.3 and 314.20 both address the isue of maximum setbackfrom the surface, but there is no code, either building or electrical to my knowlege, that requires a certain depth of penetration.
What happens if I have a sandwich wall with plaster on both sides?Would I than be required to chissel out 1/4 inch of plaster on the wall opposite my box? Talk about recipies for cracked plaster!
