Are regular branch circuits allowed in the same conduit as smoke detector and/or fire alarm circuitry?

I have a job to install a small unit heater and being able to run its branch circuit through the existing smoke detector conduit would save me from having to drill through a block and brick wall.

Not in a million years would that pass muster here....without having a code book handy I would say it's an NEC violation to boot.

Thanks for the input. I was able to get to my code book and found the reference for anyone interested. From the 2008 NEC, it is:

760.48 Conductors of Different Circuits in Same Cable, Enclosure, or Raceway.

(B) Fire Alarm with Power Supply Circuits. Power supply and fire alarm circuit conductors shall be permitted in the same cable, enclosure, or raceway only where connected to the same equipment.

That is an exception to what we are not allowed to do. I was wondering if you were referring to that method.

I think there's a big confusion here about whether we're talking about fire alarm systems or smoke detectors. They're seperate animals. A smoke on a commercial fire alarm system is a difference species than a smoke in a dwelling.

Interconnected resi smokes.... I've only seen 14/3 NM used for them. Anyone do it different?

Yes I have seen the interconnect wire run separate then the branch circuit wire on a resi. system. The signal that sets them off on the inner connect is very low volt so no need to run it in a 600v wire. I find it much easier to just run 14/3 and be done with it. I did have a situation last year where a guy working with me (who seem to not pay as close attention to his work as he should) forgot to run smoke detectors on the main floor of a 3 story house. So I put in two wireless smokes and the rest wired. That was a pain in the rear because no one around here stocks wireless.
