Breaker Rating...

Hello...


I have two Distribution Board on my first DB there is a spare 63A,I will use this 63A breaker and run it to second panel. The second panel have a 100A as my main breaker connected on it are (2) 32A and (4) 25A, can I use that 63A to protect my 100A breaker? or should I upgrade the 63A breaker to a higher rating? What about about the cable size?

It is allowable to protect a larger breaker with a smaller breaker. If you keep your 63A breaker than you would not have to change the wiring. Only a load calculation can tell you if the 63A feeder is the correct size.

If you are building to IEC and BS standards, you should probably check in BS 7671 wiring regulations.

Your probably in a situation with limited resources. In Iraq I dealt with this constantly. Putting a 63a breaker in series with a 100A breaker will never be a violation but may be deemed ridiculous. Make sure your load won't cuase a nuisance tripping on the 63A breaker.

You are right the only available breaker is 63A....Okay... granted it's not a violation of the code, why it seems ridiculous?
