Does anybody know what breakers if any are listed for a crouse-hinds. The panel reads it also accepts bryant and westinghouse.

Re: breakers for an older panel

I cant read on any of my ITE breakers that it is listed for bryant/Westinghouse. How can I be sure it is listed for the application.

You have to check the label on the panel itself.

For me, the bottom line is that Siemens/Murray is the modern equivalent to Crouse Hinds so that's what I would use.

Re: breakers for an older panel

Not to make a mountain out of a mole hill here but, The panel cover says it accepts Bryant, Westinghouse, and of course crouse hinds. It does not say Seimens type QP. I guess Seimens would have the listing info that a Seimens Type QP is the replacement for Crouse hinds.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks I will ask my Seimens rep for documentaion on this. Not that I dont believe you but for the inspector if he happens to ask.

From the Cutler-Hammer Site:

BR Family Breakers

With the acquisition of Westinghouse?s
Distribution and Control Business
Unit (DCBU)
in 1994, Eaton Corporation
gained the circuit
breaker and loadcenter
manufacturing and marketing operations
of Westinghouse. Prior to 1989,
these products were manufactured by
Westinghouse?s Bryant subsidiary in
Bridgeport, CT. The products from this
facility bore the Westinghouse and
Bryant nameplates. In 1988, Westinghouse
purchased Challenger Electric,
redesigned the product, and moved
all production from Bridgeport to
Jackson, MS. As Eaton integrated the
product lines in 1995, all loadcenter
production shifted to the Lincoln, IL
facility.
To achieve economies of scale, the
product line was completely redesigned
and is currently marketed as the Cutler-
Hammer Type BR 1-inch loadcenter.
Though redesigned, it retained many of
its unique characteristics. The product
features aluminum bus as standard with optional copper bus available
on limited styles. The bus is cut and
formed to produce the breaker stabs.
The current design also maintains the
use of the Westinghouse, Bryant and
Challenger breakers.

TYPE CL BREAKERS

UL Classified breakers are designed
and tested to be both mechanically
and electrically interchangeable with
circuit breakers manufactured by
General Electric?, Thomas & Betts?,
ITET/Siemens?, Murray?, Crouse-Hinds?
and Square D?.
By reducing your breaker inventory
from six manufacturers to one, you
streamline your stock and shelving
space. Contractors will be able to
reduce the types of breakers they carry
on their trucks. Your customers will be
able to install new circuits on the first
site visit, as long as they have Cutler-
Hammer Type CLs and CHQs at the
ready.
With a high-level of protection
and fast tripping response, these are
the one-source, one-brand breaker
solution you?ve been looking for.

Re: breakers for an older panel

It sounds like I may have a similar Crouse Hinds panel to Joe’s panel. My house was built in 1984. This may not add a whole lot to the previous discussion (except for the “ITE” footnote) but I did a bit of research and compiled a list of breakers that appear to be compatible with my panel:

Breaker - Style/Type - Manufacturer

Murray/Crouse Hinds - MP - Siemens

Siemens - QP - Siemens

Cutler Hammer (CH) - BR, CL - Eaton

General Electric - THQL,THQP - Gen Electric

Square D* - HOM (homeline) - Schneider El.

Bryant** - no longer made

Westinghouse** - no longer made

ITE*** - no longer made

*FYI - Schneider Electric (Square D) does NOT recommend using "classified" breakers. Classified breakers are breakers that have been shown by a third party (such as UL - Underwriter Laboratories) to be interchangeable with breakers manufactured by various companies. In this case, Cutler Hammer makes a type CL breaker (see above list) that is UL classified to interchange with the Crouse Hinds breakers that are recommended for my Crouse Hinds panel.

**Bryant was apparently acquired by Westinghouse, which in turn was acquired by Cutler Hammer (Eaton).

***ITE was a company that manufactured circuit breakers. It developed a certain type of breaker known as an I-T-E breaker (inverse time element = I-T-E). (To add to the ITE confusion, Siemens makes an I-T-E type breaker that does not appear to be compatible with my panel, and I-T-E is a Siemens trademark.) The company known as ITE (or known later as the ITE Imperial Co.) was apparently merged with Gould Inc. and then was eventually acquired by ABB.
