I lived in your area for five years. I lived in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake before I moved to NC. Lake Placid would be an excellent meeting ground:wink: Keene Valley would even be better:smile: I was thinking "central" for all of us:wink:

I visit Lake Placid almost every summer. I love the Adirondacks (Gods Country). I mountain bike at White Face.

If you had regional ones, I think I could get to one of them. Stagger the dates so if one had a conflict, you could go to a different one. Also, you might wish to go to multiple ones. It would be nice if Mike Holt could attend one or two of them. After dates and places have been set, George (the Chief Moderator) could invite him and see if it would fit into his busy schedule. :)

I spent a year in high school there brian while I was in foster care. Funny enough, my real family lived in the Rochester area for 10 years

I lived in Nicholville brian when I was up there. I wonder if your Mom would remember that town. BEAUTIFUL country!!!!!!!!!!

It's kind of a short notice, but if it was planned a year or so in advance, just how many of you would actually plan to attend?
It will always depend on how far away from Va. you're talking about. Even a year's notice doesn't change whether we'd be able to afford traveling an unlimited distance.

It's true that the farther the distance, the greater the notice necessary, but that also means committing to something we may not be able to afford when the time arrives.

The Germantown get-together works for us because of geography, not lead time. I'm in agreement that localized meetings are the way to go for the majority of us.

Of course, anyone who wants to try for a larger party, I'm all for it. Whether we can make it depends more on where than on when. Therefore, I am not sure how to vote.

Yes without obligation?

I'm all for it. Let's meet in Jay, NY.

OK, speaking of Jay (there is a connection, bear with me), I'm going to let the cat out of the bag on my other internet life...

Way back in the primitive internet days, late 80s, a band of fly fishers all over the world got together and formed what became the Flyfish Listserv. It was a quiet thing back then, virtual friends with internet connections discussing fly fishing topics. But it grew and grew as the internet grew, and in the early 90s we began meeting with each other as we traveled near someone else's home turf.

Then we went for regional meetings. Called them "conclaves", and they usually involved a weekend of camping, fishing, shooting the breeze around campfires, etc, near some place that had accommodating fishing opportunities. We held our first major get-together in 1994 in Wilmington NY (just up the road a few miles from Jay, told you there was a connection), and I've been hosting that one annually ever since. You probably won't be surprised to learn that I call it the NorthEast Conclave, aka "NEC"... :)

And it took off -- we've had regional conclaves in Tennessee, California, Florida, Missouri, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Colorado, Maine, New Zealand, Arkansas, Alberta, Montana, North Carolina, Idaho, etc. Wherever there were enough people in the area and there was someone willing to organize it. Over the course of the last 15 years I've probably met 450 members of the Flyfish listserv, and I can't say there's been a bad experience in the lot. Many of my best friends now have come from that group, and vacations often get planned around those fishing get-togethers.

There's something about the group membership, the widely divergent interests but common theme, the maturity level, whatever, that made this conclaving thing click with the flyfishing listserv gang. And I suspect that the Mike Holt Forum gang is very much like this. It's clear we have a lot of divergent talent and interests here, and the folks are mostly personable and trained enough to go out in public. :) So I see no reason why the occasional regional get together wouldn't be a worthwhile experience.

So far I've only managed to meet two Forum members during my travels (George and Ron). Roger and I keep missing each other when I go fishing in North Carolina. But I'd certainly be up for shooting the breeze over a dinner table if there was a gathering within range of upstate NY. All the better if there's a trout stream nearby... :)
