I'm all for it. Let's meet in Jay, NY.
OK, speaking of Jay (there is a connection, bear with me), I'm going to let the cat out of the bag on my other internet life...
Way back in the primitive internet days, late 80s, a band of fly fishers all over the world got together and formed what became the Flyfish Listserv. It was a quiet thing back then, virtual friends with internet connections discussing fly fishing topics. But it grew and grew as the internet grew, and in the early 90s we began meeting with each other as we traveled near someone else's home turf.
Then we went for regional meetings. Called them "conclaves", and they usually involved a weekend of camping, fishing, shooting the breeze around campfires, etc, near some place that had accommodating fishing opportunities. We held our first major get-together in 1994 in Wilmington NY (just up the road a few miles from Jay, told you there was a connection), and I've been hosting that one annually ever since. You probably won't be surprised to learn that I call it the NorthEast Conclave, aka "NEC"...
And it took off -- we've had regional conclaves in Tennessee, California, Florida, Missouri, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Colorado, Maine, New Zealand, Arkansas, Alberta, Montana, North Carolina, Idaho, etc. Wherever there were enough people in the area and there was someone willing to organize it. Over the course of the last 15 years I've probably met 450 members of the Flyfish listserv, and I can't say there's been a bad experience in the lot. Many of my best friends now have come from that group, and vacations often get planned around those fishing get-togethers.
There's something about the group membership, the widely divergent interests but common theme, the maturity level, whatever, that made this conclaving thing click with the flyfishing listserv gang. And I suspect that the Mike Holt Forum gang is very much like this. It's clear we have a lot of divergent talent and interests here, and the folks are mostly personable and trained enough to go out in public.
So I see no reason why the occasional regional get together wouldn't be a worthwhile experience.
So far I've only managed to meet two Forum members during my travels (George and Ron). Roger and I keep missing each other when I go fishing in North Carolina. But I'd certainly be up for shooting the breeze over a dinner table if there was a gathering within range of upstate NY. All the better if there's a trout stream nearby...
