Bring rest of house to code

I would like to add something about smoke alarms. I think I posted about this here before, but anyway I recently saw some BRK Wireless Interconnected smoke alarms at one of the local wholesale houses. They do not have to be on the same circuit and will link together. Might come in handy for certain jobs where interconnections pose problems for installing, or are just too time consuming.

One thing i am curious about-I have never seen a disconnect on a hot water heater? This is not an NEC requirement, is it?
Bill

422.31(B) Appliances Rated Over 300 Volt-Amperes or 1/8 hp
. . . circuit breaker shall be permitted . . . within sight from the appliance

Most of the Water Heaters we run across are in little closets or garages so are not anywhere close to being in line of sight with the SES. We always install 30amp (non-fusible) disconnects.

Not to be pedantic, but that's 'alluded to'. He didn't avoid being captured by it, he made an oblique reference to it. ;) :D

Well if I could spell I would have finished school and wouldn't have had to become an inspector.

Our licensed electricians, on this planet, have to complete 34 hours of CEU's and are expected to know how to look up and apply the code sections.

We also must have the CEU's 36 hrs. I am glad that you have programed inspectors, the places I work in have human inspectors who wear many hats elect, plumb., hvac and structural all rolled into one. And yes some times I cringe when I see certain inspectors get out of the car because that inspector was a plumbing contractor in a former life. He knows plumbing code forward and backwards but he limps through every thing else. Not to say it's right or wrong but a lot of us must deal with multi trade inspectors, who bring their ideas and opinions on the job and not just one inspector who is trained in the electrical side only.

Great point and well stated. Electrical inspectors should not be doing other inspections. There is way too much to learn with just electrical and a person doing inspections should be in possession of specialized knowledge to provide the best possible service.

We had a lot of that multi trade back in the 80's and even some inspectors appointed if they worked the poles on election day, then they went professional and had inspectors test and stay current with CEU's

When did your state go to 36 hours of CEU's for every code cycle?

FYI on the building code for those that may not know regarding smoke detectors.

from 2006 International Residential Code:

R313.2.1 Alterations, repairs, and additions. When alterations, repairs or additions requiring a permit occur, or when one or more sleeping rooms are added or created in existing dwellings, the individual dwelling unit shall be equipped with smoke alarms located as required for new dwellings; the smoke alarms shall be interconnected and hard wired.

Exceptions:
1. Interconnection and hard-wiring of smoke alarms in existing areas shall not be required where the alterations or repairs do not result in the removal of interior wall or ceiling finishes exposing the structure, unless there is an attic, crawl space or basement available which could provide an interconnection without the removal of interior finishes.
2. Work ionvolving the exterior surfaces of dwellings, such as the replacement of roofing or siding, or the addition or replacement of windows or doors, or the addition of a porch or deck, are exempt from the requirement of this section.

We wired an add on attached garage and sun room, the inspector made us put 6 smokes throughout the house. The job was done without having to put any holes in the walls, and home owner did pay for the extra work. e/m

My bad, we are required 24 hrs per cycle, 8 hrs each year. I had another class on my brain that is coming up that I attend for 36 hrs. per year.

My question is would you charge extra for these problems

Yes, I would.

From now on, include the phrase "code upgrades not included" in your proposals. It is a simple solution to future problems.
