Bringing old stuff up to current Code

For many years here in Texas, I've always heard the rule "if you (as an electrical contractor) touch or modify an electrical installation, you must bring it up to current Code requirements". I can't seem to find whether this is a state law or city ordinance. Does anyone have any written references (statutes, ordinances, etc.)?

Eddie it is different wherever We go. I have been from fl. to In. Check with local AHJ and go with Your heart, electrical experience, knowledge and education. :)

Re: Bringing old stuff up to current Code

Many building codes, the IBC Section 34 for example, have very specific information on when and how much existing structures must be upgraded. It seems that, in my area, no one has progressed to the back of the book, because that is a common question that never seems to be answered.

As far as electrical only, you might turn to the local inspector, if you have one.
