Burial depth residential

Thanks, I had always gone by those numbers but I didn’t see a “yard” mentioned, only a residential driveway in that category. Then I just happen to see the top 24” number.
So are you going under a drive way?

No, there is no relief for any driveway.
There are two different rows in Table 300.5: "Under streets, highways, roads, alleys, driveways, and parking lots" and "One- and two-family dwelling
driveways and outdoor parking areas, and used only for dwelling related purposes".

The former is always 24", while the latter is 18", or 12" for column 4 (residential, GFCI, 120V, 20A max).

Cheers, Wayne

You are correct, sorry Rob

Depth requirements under residential driveways and parking areas. These depths are permitted for
one- and two-family residences

Thank you all. The question I had was, I will be trenching in a yard, not under a driveway. The word yard wasn't mentioned in the Table. I assumed a yard would be the same or less depth than a driveway, but wasn't sure.

Apparently not, for direct burial cable (column 1) in a residential yard (24") vs a residential driveway (18"). Unless you GFCI protect a 120V, <=20A circuit (column 4), in which case it's 12" either way.

If you look at Table 300.5, in the left column, under "location of wiring method or circuit", the very first listing says "All locations not specified below". Since you didn't see "yard", it isn't specified and you would use that column.
