Burial depth residential

If you look at Table 300.5, in the left column, under "location of wiring method or circuit", the very first listing says "All locations not specified below". Since you didn't see "yard", it isn't specified and you would use that column.
Since the word "yard" is 'not specified below' , then I must use the 24" ?

No. The first line is for all locations not mentioned below. Since yard is not mentioned below then column 4 would indicate that only 12" is required.
The OP does not state unequivocally that it's a column 4 application. Obviously if it is, then it's 12". But if it's a column 1 application, it's 24".

No, I was just pointing out that the 1st line/column is for anywhere that is not specifically listed, such as under roads, driveways, etc.
If you're running a 20A circuit from a GFCI, then 12" is all that is required. You go across from the left column from whichever category the job falls under to the column that matches. In the case of a GFCI protected, 20A max circuit, not in a specified area, the minimum depth is only 12" according to column #4.

Thanks. I see that now. That's the depth I've used all these years. I really don't know what made me doubt this time....I guess I was just looking for a word, "lawn or yard" to be sure.

What part of this from the OP would not be column 4?

Table 300.5. Residential direct burial UF wire 120 v 20 amp is 18” or 12” if gfi protected, correct?

What part of this from the OP would not be column 4?
Everything before "or 12 inches if GFI protected". The part about GFI protected is an "if," a case B.

I believe the OP was asking "it's 18 or 12, right?" to which the answer is "no, it's 24 (Column 1) or 12 (Column 4)". The OP was about which row to use, with the column up in the air.

It does at first seem odd that the cover depth for direct burial conductors in a residential yard is greater than a residential driveway.
