My question is about buried connections. I know all connections must be made in a box of some sort. I also know boxes have to be accessible which I assume means you can't just bury them...
When you splice a buried wire what box is normally used?
Also if you were splitting some buried EMT what box is normally used?

It does say okay for "in direct contact with the earth"

In my opinion 'in direct contact with the earth' is not the same thing as direct burial but I agree it could be more clear.

I meant to ask this before. Maybe it's not too far outta whack to ask in this thread.

Did I see something mentioned on this forum that you could use to splice romex and then lose it in a wall without it being accessible?

That's gonna be tough to argue...
What is a good example of being in contact with earth but not buried? Like half buried... or just laying on the lawn?

I hear you and don't really disagree.

I just still wonder what part of Table 300.5 applies?

how about

Column 3
Nonmetallic
Raceways Listed for
Direct Burial Without
Concrete Encasement
or Other Approved
Raceways

But since you still have to go down 18in might as well use pvc

It is within the AHJs discretion, look at 358.10(B)

'and judged suitable for the condition'

(B) Corrosion Protection. Ferrous or nonferrous EMT, elbows, couplings, and fittings shall be permitted to be installed in concrete, in direct contact with the earth, or in areas subject to severe corrosive influences where protected by corrosion protection and judged suitable for the condition.

In my accessment of this sentence, "and judged suitable for the condition." is a condition of the last part "in areas subject to severe corrosive influences" not a condition of the entire sentence.

It would not be a condition of "in direct contact with the earth"

You may be right, the NEC may allow EMT to be buried.

I still say EMT used in direct contact with or buried in earth is a bottom of the barrel installation and I would never do it.

In my area RMC rots away underground.
