Buried electric and gas lines
Residential application from the house to the detached garage:
Can the gas and electric lines be installed in the same trench?
Does the gas have to be on top?
What is the minimum separation between the electric conduit and gas pipe?
Please provide code sections.

There is no NEC separation requirement for gas and electric lines in the same trench.

This is not NEC but Pacific Gas & Electric requires 12" minimum separation (12" radial clearance) between gas and electric conduits.

That depends on whether or not the gas line between the house and the garage is run as a utility service or being fed from the gas service on the house.
