Good luck locating the buried UF

Good luck locating the buried UF

I've used a schonstedt 51bx before which I borrowed from a friend , I don't know anything about the Greenlee 508. I have a Greenlee 2011 which is more for tracing wiring behind sheetrock. In dirt it won't locate UF deeper than 3-4 inches.

You'll also probably need a TDR to find the location of the fault in the line once the line routing is mapped.
You may be able to rent something but again then you've got the learning curve (time) to over come. If you're getting paid for this make sure the client understands what a problem he asking you to help him with and that it can take time (money) to locate and fix.

We have the Ideal 958 kit and it has worked for this exact situation before. The trouble is that sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. We did not need a TDR in our case, because we were able to trace the energized portion until the signal dropped.

The 958 is not strictly an underground tracer, and Ideal does;t claim it to be, but the handy video shows someone tracing out pole lights in a parking lot, which I have a hard time believing.

Please let us know what works, I enjoy learning from all of you.

Used the Greenlee 508S and I had the wire located in less than 15 minutes(includes time installing 9V batteries in transmitter and receiver). Was able to get a good signal about 275' from transmitter and located cable about 18-20" down. Probably the best $300 I've spent in a long time.
