Re: Bury depth for feeder cable

Hi,

I just put in underground here in So. Cal.

The Edison requirement was this:

3 inch dia conduit buried so that the top of the conduit was at least 30 inches below grade. Any other conduit buried in the same trench
( phone, cable etc. ) had to be at least 12 inches above the 3 inch service conduit.

Hope this helps

Any special backfill or compaction requirements on top of that?

DK, he is talking about feeder cable, not service cable. The only time any electric utility would care about the depth of cable is if it were their cable. Besides that, their cable must meet the requirements of the NESC, not the NEC (there is a difference). It would also depend on where the electric utility is located and what their rules are for the installation of their cables (we require a three foot deep trench).

SGR, your answer is in 300.5. :)
