300.4 F has requirements for insulating bushings on raceways. I thought there were also requirements for cable as well. I can't find anything to back it up. What do you think?

Re: Bushings for SE connectors

I often use one out of habit but it is not requires for cables. I imagine the thought is the cable sheath extends past the connector.

Re: Bushings for SE connectors

It's not required, but advisable.

The section states conductors exiting raceways. It is debatable that the language would apply or not apply to cable connectors.

Inspectors struggle with this all the time.

What about PVC MALE ADAPTORS , are they substantial fitting providing a smoothly rounded insulating surface??

I agree as far as 300.4(F) but that is moot as 352.46 seems to require a bushing on all PVC entering a box even if it only has 14 AWG in it.

Re: Bushings for SE connectors

352.46 Bushings.
Where a conduit enters a box, fitting, or other enclosure, a bushing or adapter shall be provided to protect the wire from abrasion unless the box, fitting, or enclosure design provides equivalent protection.
FPN: See 300.4(F) for the protection of conductors 4 AWG and larger at bushings.

This is always an interesting subject.
Is a male adapter not an adapter??
If it is?it not a fitting design that would provide equivalent protection to that of a insulating bushing.
I'm not going to state that the male adapter has the mechanical integrity of a metal fitting, but I see it as a rather good insulator???
(there was a proposal in 99 or 02 to CMP3 that does provide some degree of interpretation)

just a thought,

Charlie

Re: Bushings for SE connectors

Which raceways have a bushing section .46 seems curious to me. EMT does NOT have one, but ENT does, as well as RMC, IMC, and RNC.

I would say the male adapter is an adapter, the question is, does it "protect the wire from abrasion"? I'm not sure it "protects" the wire, but I can't see it being a problem.

Re: Bushings for SE connectors

The state inspector in WI ruled that a PVC male adapter does not require a bushing.

Re: Bushings for SE connectors

our state inspector said that if the male adapter had sharp edges he might make a deal out of it...

some of them can be kinda sharp sometimes..
