Do you have the need to trace tle location of a wire in a wall. in the ground, under concrete, and/or in thinwall or rigid conduit? And from how far away?

If so, then do you have measurement capability to do this?

Yes, some old tone tracers, an old telco TDR (for fault finding), cheap USB scope camera thingy for my phone (to look in walls), dum luck and experience. Its always hit and miss. What do you have?

I have an idea. But to make a usable useful instrument would require a substantial amount of work. It appears that I can detect a current carrying conductor from a number of feet away.

But your single response indicates little need, and thus no reason to do anything more with the idea.

gar,

yes.

a few feet.

yes. I have several, from a couple hundred dollar solution to couple thousand. Results vary mostly based on what else is around and what type signal can be used/induced.

From outside a rigid conduit can you detect a wire inside the conduit, and how many feet away from the conduit?

I would have to check. I think the signal gets imposed on the conduit and you wind up tracing the conduit but over four feet deep.

If I restrict the signal to being imposed on the wire, it should severely dampen the signal but would have to actually test that setup.
