do you ever hang other things from them? I often see air lines and such strung along under them. I guess under them is not in them so it does not violate the wording of the code.

No. However the support provided for the tray or basket may support other items independently. Trays are often placed on piperacks.

The majority of the plant I work in, is done in cable tray. A properly designed tray system is a beautiful thing to work with. Installalions go quickly, and changes and additions go quicker yet.
We have no problems with damage to the wires.

The point was that insistence on installation methods thst are non-competitive eventually will cost your job too,
