Is it permissible to use cable trays in residential work, say in the basement for running range, dryer, and other power wiring along an unfinished ceiling?

Re: Cable trays residential

Tom Baker, I like the way that you answer a persons question. You give the Code Section, and then he/she will need to look it up in their Code book.
But the answer to his question, is "yes, you can use cable tray in other than industrial use".
I had never given it any thought, but in a very large home, it would be handy to use cable tray up in an attic. I have never seen it done, but I like the idea.

Re: Cable trays residential

Here is a statement from UL which may assist you with your question:

NM Cable suitable for use in cable trays is appropriately marked. NM Cable marked for cable tray use may also have a supplementary sunlight resistant marking.
This is also specified in Section 334.10(4).

Re: Cable trays residential

Has anyone ever seem NM cable with a rating for use in cable trays?
I've never seen it but then again I have never looked.

Re: Cable trays residential

I'd have to bet that cable tray and special NM cable is more expensive than cheap NM and some staples.

Re: Cable trays residential

I would use some ledger board and call it a day. It costs about $10 at Home Depot.

Code issues aside, cable tray sounds like expensive overkill for a home.
