California 20 day preliminary notice "private " works

Does anyone know in CA if you must file the 20 day prelim if you are a subcontractor regardless if you wish to protect the lien rights.

I guess what I am asking is if this is optional. Meaning that if you don't the only consequences is you loose your lien rights.

To the best of my knowledge, you are not required to. As you stated, you loose your lien rights if you do not file it though.

Someone told me different but I do not see anything in my CSLB law handbook.

That is the way I always knew it to be. You just loose your rights to lien. why?

I was told that it was against contractors law to do nothing. Yo must serve the notice.
