California 3-Way

These seem gimmicky, but as someone said, useful to be acquainted with for service work. You don't see them around here, IMO. (East Coast) You see a lot of feeding into and out of the same box in a three way setup, but not in the fashion that keeps everything hot (drawing #2)

Is 13 illegal because the current is unbalanced in the 14/2 at the bottom between the 2 switches ?
