California vs NEMA??

Hmm, never heard that one; I have heard them called "RV" "spider box" or "CS" connectors. Beware- there is a 3-phase+EGC version.

The entertainment industry, specifically touring rock shows, use the 3-ph + gnd version to power chain motor distro. It's a rugged connector, handles 50A, and is cheaper and smaller than a pin-and-sleeve connector of roughly comparable stats.

The blades are shrouded too, so it cuts down on bent pins from being smacked around in road boxes too.

For sure and this applies to any usage of 50 amp cords.

If you are handling 50' to 100' of 8/4 or 6/4 rubber cords you will drop them and handle them roughly. Standard twist lock pins will get bent, no maybe about it.

These California 50s take a beating no problem at all.

They take a beating but still get beat. I've replaced enough plugs that were so out-of-round they wouldn't mate. Does take some special work to achieve this-

SceneryDriver- I've got a couple of (well marked) 3-ph CS motor tails in the kit. With single-phase motors becoming more common, don't use them much. (The 1/4 ton motors are almost cute.)

This is from not mating the ends of cords whrn coiled

Sorry, no, that is not the result of normal handling; that's from abuse- either badly whacking them around while stringing, which needs un-mated connectors, or from driving over them. It takes a lot of work to bend that metal, I couldn't even flex the shell with 18" long Channel-locks (didn't have a vice handy).
Normal handling can vary per industry.

There are several standards to which things are built, in increasing levels of robustness:

1) Residential
2) Commercial
3) Industrial
4) Military Grade
5) Nuclear Weapons Proof
6) Stagehand resistant

Those little 1/4T and 1/8T motors are adorable. Fischer-Price's My-First-Motor line. They come with the optional "Bubble Blowing Lawn Mower" kit during the holidays :)
