Can conductors pass thru the Meter Socket enclosure??

Say for instance the 'meter socket enclosure (MSE)' is surface mounted on the exterior of a dwelling. The back of the enclosure has a nipple leading to a surface mounted panelboard in the garage.

If you had intentions of wanting to mount a transfer switch outside next to the MSE, could you run the generator conductors from the transfer switch, thru the MSE in order to reach the panelboard?

THe reason I ask is it's conceivable that the meter is pulled but you would still have hot conductors passing thru to the panelboard.

Code violation?

Even if there was not violation (and I'm not sure about that), I highly doubt you'd get the utility to approve such an installation.

threephase,

If I am understanding you correctly, I would have to say that this installation would be in violation of 230.7 in the 2005 NEC.

(The nipple would be a service raceway.)

In the situation you are stating sounds like the meter is being used as a raceway to connect two other raceways together a violation of 230.7 because the meter contains unfused conductors the nipple would not be a service raceway as it will only contain fused conductors form the service rated transfer switch.
