Is it ok to mount a 800 amp switch on the side of a 1600 amp service i was told i was going to be doing this job but it dosnt sound right to me.
I havnt been to the job but from what i was told it is outdoor on a transformer pad. I was just wondering if you can use a panel to support another panel I have never done it but i cant find a violation

I can't cite a code article for this being a violation, but I would think it would be a questionable issue. I guess its kind of luck supporting a conduit off of another conduit. For what its worth, if it were me I'd rather mount the switch independently rather than on the side of the switchgear.

If you're to do it, at least be certain that you are securing to support framing of the existing gear and not just a piece of sheet metal. There could be a violation in access to the existing equipment as well. I'd definately look at independent support options first.

Might also want to check with AHJ. In Washington state, I had to have an independent stand for my disconect on rooftop units. Utah and Nevada, screw the disco on the side and let's go!

110.3(B) would be the rule I would look at. The mgf may say the 1600 amp gear is not designed for the extra weight. It could be a problem in a earthquake.
