People are just trying to stay alive. Toyota prices are slashed dramatically so why shouldn't someone who is having a hard time keeping his men employed. Hell even the fast food places have slashed their prices so they can stay open. Times are tough- we may all have to adjust our prices if the economy doesn't change soon. I am still fortunate but I don't know for how long.

It's guys like you with that attitude....blah blah blah... ;)

Why even bother to say something that makes sense Dennis, these know-it-alls will just try to beat you down.

With all due respect of course.

I'm with the can light guy, whatever it takes to make a buck.

The ad says all work done by a Master Electrician.
Doesn't sound like he's trying to keep his men employed unless his employees are Master Electricians. :)

Six can lights as loss leader?
Whatever happened to installing one surface mount light fixture as a loss leader?

Whatever happened to having six hoiuses to wire wit six more coming out of the ground?

Dinosaurs are extinct, everyone is looking for the edge beaten paths are for beaten men.

What great way to advertise look how effective it is he has the folks from MH forum talking about it.I think this wil make his phone ring and if he has any salesmanship about him I bet he upsells

The big blue has 6 cans and trims for $60.00
wire ,switch ,old work box would add $20.00
6 hours at $30/hr would be another $180.00
total $260.00

Profit on job $40.00

A one man shop trying to expand their customer base while putting some profit in the company coffers

I can do it in less than 6 hours , in fact , I have done it in 3- 3 1/2 hours ( alone) including a switch fished down the wall.

Fact is $40.00 is better than nothing. I don't know the guys situation at all and it is none of my business. Maybe he just wants a little bread and butter on the table rather than sit at home crying about no work.

You all are so quick to condemn without knowing the reason for his price. Maybe it is to get in the door and get other work. The fact is it is his business, and he doesn't need us to tell him what to do. You all have nerve telling people what they should make. If I want to work for nothing, and I do on occasion, that is my business and nobody elses.

I would bet he does a load test and bangs the HO for a home run. There is no way he could do that job in a 2 story house and working on the main floor without doing damage. We all have been there and last time I checked, there was no magic snake available.
There is a hook in there somewhere otherwise the guy is a complete moron.. IMO

Not necessarily so. There may be trusses between floor- I would bet he is not installing an extra switch but using the feed to an existing overhead.

I retroed a very long room with 6 cans without doing any damage except for a small hole at the ceiling for the switch leg-- their were no lights over head and a second floor.
I cut the holes for the cans and then used those opening and long bits to drill between the joists to each can. In one direction you are running with the joist. It can be risky and I won't do it with a bathroom above the room.

The EC running the ad says ANY ROOM there are no conditions mentioned. Here on Long Island, you might find wooden "I" beams between floors, but I have never found trusses in a single family home. Maybe in Utah things are different

I guess there are no 2 story houses in his area? no plaster ?

how can you promise no damage when you have not seen the house

we have old mansion houses here that have plaster and are like museums. Go try to do anything in that house for $300

this looks like a sure fire way to go out of business

"Oh a switch? That's another $100.00. People "normally" put these in rooms that already have a ceiling light on an existing switch. Oh, and ma'am... it seems the circuit in this room is already overloaded and can't support an additional 390 watts. Gonna need a new circuit run for $250.00. Could you believe the way they slap these houses together these days? Boy oh boy. By the way, I notice you sure do have a lot of electronic gizmos around here. Would you be interested in a whole-house surge protector? Or how about this wattage-maximizer gizmo that reduces your electric bill legally for $299.00? I'll pay for itself in only a few months!

Oh, and ma'am, while running the circuit I notice your panel is in violation of NEC Article..."

Earlier this week I went and looked at the 6 can lights the guy wanted installed and gave him a price.

This was in my e-mail this morning.
By the way the guy is having granite counter tops installed even thought the existing counter tops are in new condition and probably only about two years old.

Thanks for your quote. I have one other favor to ask you. Could you quote me a price on just drilling holes and fishing the wire for the 6 recessed lights and then 2 holes for the pendant lighting wired from the one light switch? I'm thinking that I could just purchase all the light fixtures and wire them myself. I could mark all the hole locations, so all you would need to do is cut the holes and fish the wire, leaving them hanging outside the holes. I realize that this would probably void any type of electrical waranty/garauntee that you have, but I am pretty confident in wiring. I could even cut the holes myself and you just fish the wire. I am trying to keep this as cheap as possible.

Thanks for working with me on this,

Or offer to deduct $10 or so per can for the can installation, telling him that's the easy part, obviously, since he's confidant he can do it himself.

it's april fools right? you're spoofing us with this, right? this chrome plated,
low octane twit actually sent that to you?

my bs filter has gotten so clogged lately.... time to clean it with a toothbrush.

i had one of these not that long ago.... after dealing with him, and running
120' of thinwall, he wanted me to put in the malibu lights in his front yard,
for free.... so i did.

did you know you can put in 10 malibu lights, two transformers, complete, in
16 minutes? including unwrapping them? when you don't care how it looks,
it's amazing what you can accomplish..... :D (it was uglier than a mud fence)

i'll have to post the whole story some evening when i'm in a fair old froth....
it's a good story.... and iwire loves a yarn.

the truth is, i spent a total of 4 1/2 hours there, the bill was $1,000, the
materials were $85, and it wasn't worth it. **that** is a seriously annoying
customer...... ... the only reason his phone number is still in my dialing
directory is that if he calls, i don't want to answer by accident, and the
personalized message that goes to his phone number only says i have gone
into the witness protection program, and am unavailable. :D
