I have see this topic posted more then once on this site. I have read I believe them all. But A freind of mine has a Crouse Hinds panel. Can I infact put a murray breaker in. I know it fits and I know Hinds Distribution was purchased by Murray, and then Murray was purchased by Siemens and ect. But I need hard evidence that its legel by manufacture to put a murray breaker in. Or another breaker. Looking for a link I can print off of to show inspector. Any idea?

Just because a breaker fits in the panel does not necessarily mean it is okay to put it in. Technically, the breaker is suppose to be listed for the panel it is used in. I seriously doubt you will be able to get listing info on an obsolete product.

Crouse-Hinds sold there distribution equipment division to Siemens. Siemens renamed the company back to Murray. Murray breakers have the same part numbers as the original Crouse-Hinds (MP, MT, etc.) Cutler-Hammer has no connection to Murray or Crouse-Hinds. Cutler-Hammer does make UL classified replacement breakers that can be used but the direct replacement would be Murray.

Cutler Hammer BR is the UL replacement for a Crouse-Hinds panel.

Forget showing this proof to the inspector what about the Insurance Investigator.

Where can this be found for documentation?

Marc, there is nothing in that document that says that a Cutler Hammer Type "BR" breaker is an acceptable replacement for Crouse Hinds; only Bryant, Challenger and Westinghouse are mentioned. I think you may be getting your "CH's" confused.

However, I believe a Cutler Hammer Type "CL" (Classified) is suitable.

I'm still curious, as some others are, if a Murray or Siemens breaker is suitable for Crouse Hinds euipment.

I just spoke with my supplier of CH and they said that CH type "CL" is a suitable replacement for Crouse Hinds up to a DP 50.

From the Siemens website:

"Siemens circuit breakers are suitable for use in existing products manufactured by I-T-E, Gould, Siemens-Allis and Siemens Energy and Automation."

Did they give you a website or a .pdf file where that is said to be true. Like i said i need proof. I have researched and found nothing. However, evertime you look up CH breaker it says CH/Murray.

The UL requirements for classified breakers requires that the panles that breaker has been classified for use in must be listed on the package or instructions that are supplied with the classified breaker. Here is the CH classified breaker directory.
