We have a 400/230y panelboard that runs critical servers that cannot be shut down. The solid core CT on C Phase has gone bad and needs to be replaced. We cannot take the board down and the manufacturer's rep has already sent me a replacement Split Core CT that matches the solid core CT specs. The panelboard has a 26 Cal rated Arc Flash label and we have 40 Cal suits. I am wondering if there is any major issue with abandoning the bad solid core CT and installing the new split core and leaving at least the 1 inch recommended gap between multiple CT's.

IME very few "critical" servers can' t loose a power feed- if they are really "critical" there are multiple units with multiple power feeds. When you don't have at least +1 redundancy (e.g. two or more servers with redundant power to each one) they obviously aren't that "critical". Heck, most production servers have two or more PSs; run a temp feed to one of them and then take down the other for long enough to change out the CT (and you might want to consider performing other PM at the same time).

Oh, and what happens if leads from the left-in-place CT fail open?

In general I think what you are suggesting will probably work. I'm not thrilled with leaving the old CT in place but it's not hurting anything now on it's probably not going to fail any worse than it already has.

I suspect that what you really want is dispensation to do live work. I don't see how this meets any of the exceptions for live work.

Is there someplace you can put the CT where you don't have to be exposed?

unless shutting it off creates more of a hazard to life and property
than leaving it on, you'll have to schedule an outage.

however.... if the person doing the work is NOT an employee
(the holder of the license, in the flesh) and does not meet the
test of an employee, then OSHA doesn't apply to them......

that is my understanding.... i'd be interested in seeing what some
folks on here think regarding that. my knowledge of labor law
isn't nearly as good as some others on here is.
