Can you support exit signs like this?

Did they drill a hole in the 4 square box cover for the fitting? Or do they make box cover plates with knock outs?

I think it would be more secure if they rotated the box 90 degrees and use a side knock out. Plus you would still be able to take the cover off without taking the exit sign down.

I don't see this as much different than mounted on a drop ceiling except for the conduit drop. The bracket still screws to the box. The swivel bracket at the upper box is used all the time and provides adequate support for a lightweight fixture like an exit light.

That is probably a luminaire as well as emergency illumination unit.

OP was about exit signs. I would not think an exit sign is a luminaire, unless it is also a combo exit/emergency light. The primary function of an exit sign isn't to illuminate an area.
He was just answering my question from one post above.
