Many new universal ballasts will operate at any voltage between 120-277 volt (+/-) 10%. Here is one such ballast:

I have seen smart ballasts before , 120 or 277 same wire connection , the rep is saying -anything in between also.

That's what the sales brochures say, but the technical documentation on those ballasts only lists 120, 230, and 277. Not sure what else to say.

What to say?

If the tag on the ballast indicates 120 through 277 volt I would not hesitate to connect it to any voltage in that range.

110.3(B) tells us to follow the product labeling.

Not even Crayola has that many colors! :-?

Check out what you can get from these guys

MC

We just had them make 10,000' of 12/2 Fire alarm MC with white and blue conductors. Those colors are the standard for the customer.

We did a retrofit job back in February and the entire plant was speced out with GE "smart" ballasts that automatically sense what voltage is being applied to them and adjust accordingly. When you power these lights up, there is a momentary pause, must be the time in which the ballast is "learning" the voltage. It makes it nice because you don't have to worry about geting the wrong ballasts in a place that may be running different voltages in different areas such as this plant does. On the down side, since the installation, there has been about a 5% failure rate on these ballasts. Brings back nightmare memories of retrofit jobs I worked on in the late 80's and early 90's with Magnatek ballasts.

I also, just yesterday, worked on a sign with Universal electronic HO ballasts which stated on the label "120 to 277v". First I'd ever seen.

In the school that we are currently doing, all of my bathroom, mezzanine, and custodial rooms have universal ballasts. They are good for 120,208,277. It is great because I feed them with the temp power before permenant goes in and have better light for all the trades to trim or whatever they need to do.

And you do this free? :-? (j/k)

One of my best friends builds elevators, and was treated like royalty by everyone who wanted to use the elevator to move equipment, materials, tools, themselves, etc.

One faux pas and it's "Sorry, it's not running right now!"
