Capping off a single conductor

As long as it screws down tight, covers the conductor, and I can't pull it off, I've never worried about it. But then again I've almost always worked on industrial machinery, no permits, no inspectors, function was everything, petty rules not so much. Although that seems to be changing, thank God I'm old now

And they don't test for that because they are testing wire connectors, and when you only have one wire, there is no connection.
But the 600V table lists (1) #16 and (1) #18

To answer the OP, I've used an Ideal 73B to cap a single solid #12 many times. I prefer them to yellow in this situation.

Never mind the listing. Put one on that holds tight. I doubt that ANY wire nut has ever been tested for a single wire. A WAGO probably has.

Is electrical tape listed for capping of a single wire?

Lets not make the code book any thicker than it is.
The WAGO is rated for a single conductor per port. You won't find a one port device either though. Shouldn't be any requirement to use all available ports either. So cap you single conductor with a two port if you want to cost less but you certainly could cap it with an eight port connector as well.

Or put some tape on it
