What I would like to know is how you got the first four cats in the pipe.

I guess I can say that CAT 5 is clearly not covered by Article 800, but is not clearly covered by Article 725. The basis for putting it under Article 725 is the word "singnaling" in the scope.

How do any of the things that affect premises wiring (fire, heat, physical damage, etc) know whether there are phones or computers at the other end of the cabling? Some install methods mix ethernet and voice phone wires in the same cable jacket. Voice over IP really puts this in nebulous territory. You could reference article 645, but that is an optional install method, so we'll still in ill defined territory.

What if the CAT5 cable had a connector on it? How many in a 3/4" EMT conduit?

Like many code rules, the difference is just an arbitrary line.

You could reference article 645, but that is an optional install method, so we'll still in ill defined territory.

Article 645, where used, only applies within the "computer room".
