Cat 5 install

I am wondering if there is a section in the code that states (1) cat 5e cable must be in pipe in a wall or (2) what kind of protection is required for a cable entering the top of a wall (metal stud) and continuing down the wall to a box.

1. There is no section of the NEC that requires Cat 5 or any other commuication cable to be installed in a raceway. However, there is also nothing the code that prevents its.

2. Start at 800.6. This section then refers you back to 300.4(D), however, I think it would be prudent to meet all the requirements of section 300.4.

You should use the same grommets on the top and for horizontal runs as you would use for NM though there is no requirement in the NEC.
