I am running cat5e from our first floor to the roof for a wireless access point. The easiest way is though the elevator shaft. Does it have to be in emt? Does it have to be plenum rated?

This is not an NEC issue and in most cases nothing other than elevator associated piping, machinery, equipment, etc... is allowed in an elevator shaft or machine room, see ANSI 17.1 I believe.

Roger, wouldn't 620.37(A) prohibit this install also?
I don't think so...the Cat 5 is a Chapter 8 installation...Chapter 8 is stand alone and 620.37(A) does not apply unless it says so in Chapter 8.

Sorry Chris, I have to go with Don now. (I'm practicing being a politician:grin:)

Don, you and Roger are both killing me here. I have given up the 300.5 vs 725.3 argument. But chapter 8 is stand alone. Great.
Now show me something that allows Chapter 8 in my hoistway unless it is used directly in connection with the elevator.

Chris, that's where ASME A17.1 (elevator code) will come in.
