CATV splitters

I have at least 10 cable tv jacks in a house. These jacks are not only for catv, but high-speed internet as well. Homeowner would like all of them wired in, but I cannot find a large enough splitter. I've looked at Home Depot and Lowes, but the largest splitter has 6 outputs and 1 main input. Is there a splitter large enough to accomodate 10 outputs? Could I use the output of a splitter to feed another splitter to wire in all 10 jacks or would I have too much db loss? If anyone has any links, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
 
use a 2way on the line coming in, with the cable modem in one port and use the other port to feed a larger splitter for the TVs. This will guarantee the strongest signal to the cable modem and its already set up properly incase you need to use an amp for the tvs

Agreed, modems do not like going through splitters, so keep them to a minimal.
 
Just be sure you're getting high bandwidth (1ghz) splitters and make sure they're bidirectional.

I sure wouldn't knock myself out looking for a 10-way splitter. I'd probably get a 2-way, with one port for the cable modem, and the other port going to an amp. From the amp, jump out to another 2-way splitter to feed two 6-way splitters. Put terminating caps on the unused ports.

FWIW, I use splitters and amps from Extreme Broadband. I think they're the best value for the money. They have really nice amps, since you make your own cable from the wall wart to the amp out of RG-6 and regular F-connector ends.

Keep in mind that it is not advisable to connect cable modems to wall jacks like TVs. Normally they are provided for first, before any splitters or amplifiers. If you did the right thing with all home runs it would be a simple matter to reconnect a line that supplies a modem ahead of everything. But that throws a monkey wrench in your "make every jack live and forget it" scheme.

Also, as long as someone mentioned terminators, any unused jack should be terminated also but you can guess how long they will stay with a terminator on them. This is the main reason you don't "make live" a house full of jacks- those with nothing connected to them will causes leakage problems. Sorry, don't do it, tell the homeowner he will have to call the cable company for those moves and extra sets.

Who's responsible for system egress, anyhow? The cable company, if what I know is right. To that end, I don't feel especially compelled to help them meet their requirements. I do, however, feel compelled to give the customer what it is they want. The last I knew, the FCC still considers premesis egress part of the system egress.

Quite correct. So as soon as the cable guy passes the address and it sets off an alarm on the leakage monitor they all have in their trucks, whatever you did won't last long.

I really don't get it. You KNOW it's wrong yet you still do it. When the cable company knocks on the door YOU are the only one who is going to get the blame regardless of what the customer originally said to you. That's the way to make yourself and this industry look good? Uhh, the customer wanted me to do it that way so I do whatever they tell me...

So far, I haven't said that I've done or do anything. I happen to use 75 ohm terminators on any and all unused jacks and ports. I buy them by the 500 count. I mostly like to push your buttons, since you get wound up so easily. :grin:

That would be a lie, in that case. I don't like any of the prefab structured wiring gizmo's. I get an empty can and go from there.
