My Dad - a retired firefighter of 30+ years - told me years ago....unattended cooking is the #1 cause of fires...followed by smoking in bed...as proof he recounted numerous 4AM alarms where they(the FD) had to wake a sleeping drunken person off a couch or bed in order to extinguish the flames and put out the kitchen that was already engulfed.

There's probably a little confusion between the cause of home fires, and the cause of home fire-related deaths.

Not contradicting you, celtic, but just pointing that out.

I don't think the FD is in the habit of waking dead people

I must be physic I knew that was coming or I was going to have to say it.

I can see the head lines now "In a government effort to save lives home cooking to be banned".

I mean they had Santa give up his pipe.
Then Australia Santa contractor banded Ho Ho Ho, as offensive.
Now on the news the US surgeon general wants Santa to slim down, to be a good role model for kids and is asking parents to leave carrots in lieu of cookies...I AM SERIOUS

And he already flies without getting permission from the FAA.
How well does he treat those reindeer, anyway? Is PETA involved?

I can almost see why they want to get rid of him, he's got all kinds of people seeing red!

Almost every time I watch the news and there is a residential fire the news people say it is is electrical. Even while it is still burning.

This time of year is a very fire prone season....fresh trees, water not maintained, and lots of lights - do people still put candles on thier x-mas trees?

Dear old Dad would NEVER allow a real tree for the holidays because of the possibility of fire....and the many sad faces he saw as he tossed "presents" (no charred and melted boxes) out windows.

Dad didn't have much to say about menorahs burning down the house....there are candles on a menorah or are they lamped?

How many home fires would be prevented if real trees were not allowed indoors vs. how many home fires would be prevented from the all encompassing AFCI requirements?
(Rhetorical question)

Christmas trees

Christmas trees

I saw a demonstration once where a dry Christmas tree was placed on a very small fire. It was unreal how fast the tree burned up! Like it was saturated in gasoline!! Also I recall seeing a news clip on TV that was warning people about electric cloths dryers. There was a large national report of home fires in the dryer vent hoses. This was the plastic vent hose blocked with lent that was igniting and the the plastic would engulf in flames! Good enough reason to go with the metallic vent hose!

wouldn't that make the #1 cause drinking, followed by cooking, then smoking ?

My kids leave beer and popcorn for Santa, I guess he likes those better than Milk and cookies.

If the parents are leaving the treats for Santa; who is delivering the presents? The kids?
