If you had both a grid(2x2) drop ceiling or a gyp board ceiling you would have two different supports for a 4" oct box with an occupancy sensor?

1. on a gyp board clg. what support would you need?? Could it just rest on the ceiling?
2. grid ceiling would you always need tbar like attached pic? Could the box be mounted right next to the grid were you wouldn't need t bar? What would you use...some Caddy support I'd say

Arlington makes this specifically for a grid ceiling.

Is the gypsum attached to a wood ceiling? If so then there are many options which you can google.

Amazing how they make that for a T bar ceiling and not being able to be used with MC or other armored cables.

I know it has a KO but I wouldn't use plastic boxes in commercial with MC.

It can be. There is a 1/2" KO that could be used. There is a metal box that is made that it looks like half metal half Plastic.

For a suspended ceiling there are numerous products.
I use the caddy/Erico 512hd

For a drywall ceiling I use these: Caddy/Erico TCB

Although similar to the standard screw gun bracket they are rated for fixture support

Also there are other manufacturers out there that are comparable. I just mentioned the Caddy /Erico for reference.

I would like to thank the OP for posting this. I need to support a 4 foot square 60 pound fixture in a drop drywall ceiling. I was trying to think of ways to get additional support. The framers said the grid cannot support the fixture.

We would use a bracket across the T bars and a threaded rod to the structure above connected to a rated box for that weight.

I think he is talking about a suspended hard ceiling and not a grid with lay in panels, so part of the problem might be the ability to get in there to support anything, but yes something likely does need to be added that somehow has independent support from the structural ceiling.

The fact it is 4 foot square possibly means you can cut a hole large enough to get into the space above to make some support though.

There are several different type of drywall ceiling system including T-bars but there might be another type involved. We see T-bar with drywall and hat channel with drywall. In either case we would use a box bracket for support on the metal grid structure and a threaded rod through the box up to whatever is above.

For just an occupancy sensor in drywall, I would use any appropriate old-work box; they don't weigh much.
