Ceiling Fan Box Question

This question is in reference to the plastic westinghouse grey ceiling fan boxes that are like a pancake box and then extends up the side of the stud and is plastic: Does the center scew used to mount the jbox that is supplied with the jbox have to be used or can you just use a simple drywall scew to hold the plastic jbox?

In my opinion, no, you do not have to use the supplied screw. Do not scrimp on the two screws that support the fan itself, of course.

I tried getting a hold of Westinghouse and the lady has no idea what I am talking about...do you guys think that middle screw plays a role in the actual capacity rating or is it there simply to hold the jbox at rough

I don't think there is a weight rating for that box. The screws that mount the fan go directly in the the wood of the structure. The fan manufacturers provide mounting screws or you can buy heavier ones.

A drywall screw should hold the box in place for the rough. There is no ground screw so there isn't much to go wrong.
