If I am correct is there an article in the NEC that forbids a splice in a down rod of a ceiling fan; I cannot seem to locate it (I know it is not a good idea) and I had a fan company tell me they sell a splice kit just for long down rods

Re: Ceiling Fans & Splices

Splices need to be accessable.

110.14 (B) addresses splices, but not the accessible issue. Anyone else know?

I assume you are trying to add a longer downrod?

BTW, other than for looks, adding a downrod greater than 6 feet off the ceiling reduces it's effectiveness.

Re: Ceiling Fans & Splices

OK, after reading several posts on this topic, I learned a few things.

It appears that the downrod would be considered part of the CF and not a raceway (due to smaller 18AWG wires in the fan and downrod, if a raceway, minimum branch circuit wires would be 14AWG).

If you are using a UL listed extension kit then the splice could be used in the downrod. HOWEVER, most manufactures list on their packages to make the splice in the motor housing.

IMO, Make the connection in the motor hosing.
