Challange: Can you---

If you cut the 1/2' piece at a sharp enough angle you could get a much larger piece then 3/4'' through it.

Reminds of the bar trick where you pass a quarter through a hole in a coaster the same size as the diameter of the quarter...

would you like someone to hold your beer while you do this trick?

Definition: Deform 1. distort: to become, or make something become, distorted, damaged, or disfigured

2. spoil: to spoil the appearance of something and make it ugly, or become spoiled and ugly

The new office buildings have deformed the whole area.

3. physics change shape: to change the shape of something through stress, or become changed in this way

My first answer was the same as the manhole cover into the manhole, exept assume the manhole cover is larger than the manhole . if you turn the man hole cover perpendicular to the manhole and try to drop it thru a portion ( or piece) of the man hole cover goes inside the manhole. _ this does not appear to be the answer he is looking for though

If we3 cut a piece of the 3/4 conduit length wise we can place one of the left over sections into the non-deformed 1/2" conduit

Is thias a trick of verbage or an actual trick?

Can either of the pieces be cut or altered in any way?

is the answer to your question no?

your clue helped. Cut a long diagonal cut in the 1/2'' then cut a thin straight cut in the 3/4'' you will be able to fit 3/4'' round piece through the oblong 1/2'' piece.

For some reason I just couldn't think of cutting a sharp enough diagonal.

I should have been thinking of using a band saw.

That is a neat trick. Sure you are changing the outside diameter but most people would still buy a beer because in the end it's so simple. Definately good for a laugh.

If it were then every time you installed a cut piece of EMT you were violating the code.
Jim,

The word "deform", and its derivatives, is not in the corpus of the NEC or the NECH.

Cutting a ?" conduit lengthwise the entire length of the conduit, turning it into two pieces, neither of which is a complete pipe capable of containing conductors, is deforming the conduit to a condition impossible to use as a raceway.

Arch Obler had a radio play where a couple EMTs visited a strange house where the 3/4 EMT would fit inside 1/2 EMT... somehow I don't think Frank was thinking of 'The Dark.'

Heh!

I don't know that my declaration is that much of a battle. Using the electronic version of the NECH and running a simple global search on "deform" is the basis of my statement. Deform and deform* are not there, based on what the search of my copy returned.

;) I'm just keeping the talking going over the beer.

acrwc10,

That's the answer I was looking for, Dale has a nice cold beer for you!!

Last weeks "Brain Teaser" was a little break from NEC and I thought it was

a good idea, maybe other members have some "thinkers" of their own?

.... now then the PVC conduit I cannot store anything useful inside the 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch ....

We put ground rods inside of the 3/4 PVC pieces stored in our overhead tube on top of the van. The all-thread will also fit inside of the 1/2 stuff.
