A friend of mine called me yesterday and asked if I've ever run into a problem with Challenger panels. The first and last one I installed was back sometime in the late 90's. I didn't like the way the breakers fit onto the power bus. They seemed to wiggle and din't lock on properly.

That said, he noticed that the power busses were turning black or maybe an off-color due to over heating (I'm guessing). Has anyone had this experience and if so is there any solution (aside from replacing the whole panel) ?

Thanks in advance

Copper bus?

Just like wire, the bus can turn a dark color. I've seen it a few times. I don't remember the brand(s) of panel.

It's first and foremost a reaction between the metal and oxygen. But it is exacerbated by heat. I have used fine sandpaper to remove it.

After that, you could use a paste. I never have, but I would imagine it to be a dramatic improvement

We replaced many breakers with BR in a condo association . One in my old neighborhood burned up the bus in just a few years. I will look for the documents.

There used to be documentation floating around allowing BR to replace Challenger breakers.
