I should add there are three basic means of protecting conductors in a circuit (including after the receptacle)
Limiting of the load that can be connected by user.
Providing over current protection ahead or down stream of a conductor
and fault current protection that always has to be ahead of the conductor it is protecting.
The last one is where there is a problem in protecting appliances that was design for lower current sized circuits but used on larger size circuits.
