When connecting an 1/2” LB to the side of a sub panel what is NEC code on wether to use a chase nipple or male threaded coupling and lock but with bushing to join the two? As seen in pic. Thanks

OK,

You mean "a chase nipple or a close nipple with two locknuts". Sorry, my plumbing experience mandates correct terminology.

What bushing? I see none in the picture.

If the chase nipple tightens the LB to the panel wall, that works. If it does not tighten the LB to the panel, then you need a locknut on that chase nipple.

The close nipple needs two locknuts to tighten the assembly to the panel wall, unless it can screw into the LB far enough for the one locknut inside the panel to tighten the LB to the panel wall. Note, the close nipple pictured DOES tighten into the LB all the way, might work.(y)

May be the particular manufacturer I encountered, but I've never had a chase nipple tighten into a condulet to the point I felt is was firmly seated,.

I think this has been brought up before. I thought a chase nipple was only listed with a lock ring? It was that or the chase nipple was done with a RMC coupling.

As Augie said, I think all the issues were not being able to tighten and/or straight threads vs tapered…can’t remember

I agree. A chase nipple suffers from the same listing issue as other male tread conduit fittings in that it has only been tested by the NRTL for use with lock nuts.
And, as you and Augie mentioned, I to have seen them not tighten down when used like this.

Another issue with the chase nipple method is that when the voltage is 480 and you have something like a disconnect switch with concentric KO's. I see that one quite often.

Exactly as I tried to look for what is was compatible with or to be used with on listing of package but could find none. Nor could I find chase nipple or similar description in NEC so far
