Circuit Breaker Terminal Designation

When there is a terminal designation on the Circuit Breaker, such as follows, what does this designation mean? The designation that follows is from a 1200A Circuit Breaker.



4/0-500 kcmil (4)


I am particulary interested in the (4) portion of the designation.

I believe you may be correct, but I am not 100% sure.



Would it be the number of termination points per phase in each CBer?

Would each termination point be able to take the full range size of conductor labeled in the designation I provided?

This single lug has the ability to hold a quantity of 4 conductors in the range of 4/0 to 500kcmil.

I assume that there are (4) separate holes but this description is not specific enough.

I think that there are 4 lugs per phase and each lug is rated for 4/0 to 500 kcmil.

That lug desteation will called for conductor size and the quality.

I was asked this question today over the phone. I have not seen the CBer in question, but I will within the week. I will take a picture of it and post it.

For another example of this terminology look in the Square D Digest on page 7-50. Their AL400LA holds two conductors but only has one hole.
