What would be a code compliant installation in regard to a circuit exstention for example feeding a new receptacle down a wall from a attic location where knobe and tube wiring is the main wiring in this older home. thank you for your input. wireman that has not worked on knobe and tube before.

Re: circuit exstention from knobe and tube

Two methods I have used:
1. Fish an NM cable from panel so as not to disturb K&T.
2. Cut K&T in two places and install a plastic j-box at each location. Run NM between j-boxes. Run new NM fed outlet to one j-box and splice. Install non-grounded receptacle or GFCI receptacle.

Check with the AHJ in your area. Some area do not allow extensions of any kind off of knob & tube wiring. If someone plugs a window A.C into your new recept will the wiring handle the load?
To install a new recept in the attic I allways run directly from the panel. If used as a room, must likely an A.C will be used in summer, electric heat in winter. Leave the knob & tube as is. :)

Timz.

394.10 uses permitted:
(1)For extensions of existing installations.
(2)Elsewhere by special permission.

As a added comment in the 2002 NEC handbook there is this note that follows this.

Concealed knob and tube wiring is permitted to be installed only for extensions of existing installations or where special permission is granted by the AHJ of enforcement of the code. See definition of special permission in article 100.

John :)
