Just started looking into a general circuit tracer, I'm looking for something that works good but also has a reasonable price (Aren't we all). I've been looking at the greenlee 2011 circuit tracer for about $450.00, Thats about the price I'm looking to spend plus or minus, If anyone could give some opinions or experiences that could help me in my decision it would be greatly appreciated.
:)
Thanks wireman3736

Re: Circuit tracers,

I have had a Greenlee for a few years (Not sure which model) and it works good. They do have a lot of different models, so take a look at the features of each and that will help you decide which one to go with. If you want to save a few bucks, run a search on EBAY and you might get a good deal. I have seen several new and slightly used ones on their site.

Re: Circuit tracers,

The company I work with has 2 Greenlee 2011, of which I have one. They are absolute garbage in my opinion. It worked great when I first got it, then all of a sudden it didn't work worth a hill of beans. I'm looking for a new/different one now, too.

Re: Circuit tracers,

Hey Paul you kinda burst my bubble, the 2011 was the one I had made my mind up about. Your the first to say anything negative about it that I've talked with. Since it worked great when you 1st got it did you ever call the company to see if they may have had a problem with a batch, They have a limited lifetime warranty, Does anyone else have any experience with this model, I would appreciate hearing and then I can make a better educated decision on this, Thanks for all the responses, this is the 1st day I've been on this site and I was suprised at the quick responses, Thanks again Stan

Re: Circuit tracers,

Wireman, I have used the Greenlee Model 2011 and they work great. It takes time to learn how to use it. You can buy them used for about $350 in good shape. New I think they are now around $525.
Bye now,
Jim

Re: Circuit tracers,

Thanks for the response mark, I did look at that one when I was researching but it's a little more then I want to spend, I've only been in my own business for two years and work alone, spent 15 years working for other people and now that I have to pay for the stuff myself I'm a little more conservative. Thanks again

Just a follow up to anyone that cares I bought one of the Greenlee model 2011, I have had it for a little over a year now and it's done everything for me that they said it would, Satisfied customer.

the greenlee circuit tracers are nothing more than wasted space on the van that could be used for something more important like 2 soup cans and a string. i purchased the greenlee about 6 mos ago and was absolutely dissatisfied. i returned it to the manufacturer expressing my opinion and purchesed the amprobe at-4005 instead..
this is a quality tool but yes more money

i have a 4005 also but have not had very good luck as yet. I dont think I know how to use it very well . Not confident yet that it will do as it says.does anyoe know if there is a cd or video that gives a better explanation of how to use this fine peice of gear?

lol well i guess if im on big jobs for the contractor then i use their expensive one, but to be honest with you my 'CHEAP' little ideal circuit tracer i bought at Home Chepo for about $30.00 does what i need to get done. and its quick.

I keep it at home and use it when needed when i help friends out at their house or other side job.

I also have a 'toner' i use for telephone wires. good for tracing out pairs. :)

I'm not familiar with the amprobe tracer so I can't compare but I know when I 1st bought the greenlee I thought I may have made a bad choice after playing around with it, it did seam a little confusing to use. After I put it to the test in the field and became more familiar with it I have yet to have it let me down. you may not have completely understood how to use it. As long as it performs and keeps me happy it will continue to be my friend.

I have been using the Greenlee tracer for the last 2 years.
I am very satisified with it.
It works every time, no problem.
I did have a problem when I first got it. Then I read the instructions and watched the video. No problems since.

The only thing is that when you find a breaker and shut it off the transmitter switches from powered to unpowered automatically, so the signal still transmits. Can be decieving.

I highly recommend over the Amprobe.
Half the price.

I have an old Tempo 200 probe that has not failed me for as long as I have owned it.Yes it`s a cheap item but it does just what I need it to do trace wires including phone.Find breaks/opens/covered boxes.A toner is as good as the operator. With the Tempo using the metal tip that comes with it is a must.I also have found that by using an earth ground with the signal generator the volume of the probe is 10X louder. Also to find covered or cut wires in walls the probe alone can be used,it will buzz loud when passing over a covered box or a cut piece of NM in a wall or ceiling as long as power is on.
