Hi Gents,

Have any of you served as an electrical inspector on city public works projects? It would be great if someone could share their experience and give an overview of the responsibilities. Curious to know about day to day operations - our city is expecting a surge of telecommunications encroachments, and will need inspectors to oversee the work..

Cheers,
FF

Our city doesn't inspect any telecomm as it generally isn't a life safety issue. It would mainly be zoning concerns that would arise.

Do you mean cell sites?

Having worked for cable companies (although many years ago) and doing construction along right-of-ways, I don't remember any inspections. If we had to cut a street and trench we had to get a street opening permit from the municipality and post a bond just like any other contractor. I kinda remember a lot more red tape if going over or under a DOT governed roadway but nothing like any of that.

Hafta remember it's California after all...

The City of LA, that owns the largest US municipal owned utility LADWP (Los Angeles Dept Of Water and Power) works in conjunction with Building and Safety Dept.
Inspectors handle regular commercial, residential and industrial inspections.

Special projects such as telecommunication, right of way, world airport and harbor are administered by the Bureau of Contract Administration. They are above City Hall Inspection Division.

Most inspector activities are along the lines of telecommunication companies who apply for lease or use of a portion of substation pylons and towers for their antennas.

Access to these facilities require special permission and closely monitored.
My buddy still works there.
