We are planning on installing a used mixer in room that will be Class 1 Division 1 Group D (MEK). The motors on the mixer have an older UL Tag that says they are for Hazardous Locations, Class 1 Group C&D. The tag does not mention Division 1 or 2. Can these motors be used in a Division 1 room, or is there anything that can be done to make them compliant? I think the motors are TEFC.

Thanks in advance.

It does not appear that your motor will meet the requirements of 501.125(A). You may be able to provide ventilation so that your motor would comply with the provision of 501.125(A)(2).

Ordinarily, I would agree that the specific statement is superior to the general. However, in this case, the key word in 501.125(A)(1) is identified not listed, labeled or even marked. A motor marked Class I, Groups C&D has been suitably identified. See 500.8(A).
