I have been trying to find out if Class 2 wiring can be run underground without conduit, and if so at what depth must it be burried? I am assuming direct burial wire would be suitable for this application?

The application is 70V Class 2 amplifier speaker wiring.

Thanks for any enlightenment.

Speaker wiring is a Art 640 application. Article 640 can modify the rules in Chapters 1-4 per 90.3 I don't see any mention of underground wiring but 640.21(C) refers to Art 725.Your answer may be in 725.3 but I am not the best person on Art 640....

I have seen both standard speaker wire, and speaker wire listed for direct burial.
I would think the burial depth to be 6 inches as per 300.5.

I take that back, after further reading, I believe that most speaker wire can be laid right on grade.

This is one of the typical cable types we see installed for speakers

This is a cable I saw the stereo guys using for underground installation on a job.

I believe the only requirement is that the manufacture has specified that the cable is suitable for outside, or underground applications.
