Does an explosion-proof motor require a T rating? The 2002 NEC 501.8(A) states that motors specified in 501.8(A)(2) {purged} and (A)(3) {filled with inert gas} shall have no external surface with an operating temp in degrees Celsius in excess of 80% of the ignition temp of the gas or vapor involved. However, it doesn't mention the motor specified in 501.8(A)(1) which is a motor identified for a class I div. 1 location {ex-proof}. I would conclude from this that an explosion-proof motor doesn't require a T rating. Is this correct?
