Re: closet lights

410.8(D)(3) allows 6" from the fixture to the nearest point of a storage space for recessed incandescent. Storage space goes all the way to the ceiling at 12" from the sides and back (or the width of the shelf), whichever is greater.

Re: closet lights

Jim I have done several homes where the architect spec recessed cans in closets.I always tell the builder first that the lighting will be terrible but they always say that`s what the architect says go with it(These have been high end homes)
Since they have to be covered trims a 40 watt bulb
doesn`t do much.I even did one that had dimmers on closet recessed go figure ?????

Re: closet lights

Allen ,we both have seen some poor choices for fixtures ,all we can do is point it out to the GC, often i hear hold up on it if you can till i talk to the buyer. No problem if it's a huge custom and i will be there a week.If it's a track home and have a crew we just got to keep it rolling. Some arc's go as far as trying to draw the circuits, most just draw in recepts ,switches, lights, and often mis walls that need them. All they want is an electrical page so GC can get permit.Often on big customs they say forget the print, and off we go with GC marking the floor. Will gladly give them anything they will pay for, even if it's stupid,i too have put dimmers on closet lights.Had one that on a remodel built a master closet 12 x 12 and wanted outlets in every wall , why ? who cares, just do it.

Re: closet lights

I have put in many but I try to use a screw-in compact fluorescent bulb At least until I read the instruction's on the bulb packaging. It say's not to be used in enclosed fixtures. Darn!

Re: closet lights

HURK i see nothing on the package saying it can't be inclosed.I bought several 4 packs at the big orange and replaced all of our incandescents. The package says(compact size allows lamp to fit anywhere a standard incandescent bulb will fit). They are the 14 watt =60 watt and they are smaller than reg bulbs.Only problem i had was that my decora dimmers had to be removed.hope they make some in the big 3 inch types used in hollywoods and some to replace the fancy decoara types.Have seen them in bug yellow.

Re: closet lights

Hurk i read it and your right for your brand /model.
The ones i bought are made by COMMERCIAL ELECTRIC
They say (ultra mini spiral lamp)423-599
commercial electric 2455 paces ferry road n w
Atlanta georgia 30339 800-378-6998
I tried to find a web page. Now I'm curious as to why yours have the limitation and mine don't.Will try to phone them monday.Could it be the size you were using? These bulbs might be something to think about for temp. lights , given the savings in electric along with wattage being about 1/4th.The ones i bought were at home depot and cost just under $8 for a 4 pack. They are every bit as bright as conventional bulbs.

Re: closet lights

Jim Strangely enough that address is the address of the Atlanta Georgia Home Depot.

Atlanta Store Support Center
Home Office
2455 Paces Ferry Road, N.W.
Atlanta, GA 30339-4024
(770) 433-8211
Go here to see that.

Do these lamps have a UL mark?

My guess is they are made in a foreign county and are relabeled with a Home Depot "company" so they look American.

Re: closet lights

Jim as you like to stir the pot I will too. :D

The fixtures you put these into, are they listed for use with self contained compact fluorescent lamps?

The highhats I install have very specific lamps listed on them, some include compact fluorescents of the type that has a remote ballast.

I have never seen a self contained compact florescent lamp as one of approved lamps on a highhat. :D

Re: closet lights

Good point.I am sure many have not listed them as they are still kind of new and price is only starting to drop as well as the size. This may also apply to other fixtures.Being the fixture was most likely made long before the new lamps.AHJ could possibly red tag a job that installed these.Do you feel there is any hazard in using them? They seem to me to be a fine replacement.Almost no heat.Maybe the answer lies within the LISTING.What exactly were they listed for? If they were tested to replace the standard bulb then i believe we could use them.Keep stiring the pot LOL

Re: closet lights

Jim I tried to find some UL info but lamps do not seem to be in the UL white book that I have.

Do I feel there is a hazard? I have one in my enclosed porch fixture. :D

The 15 watt fluorescent seems to make a lot less heat than the 60 watt incandescent it replaced.

It is on a photo cell and has run all night every night for 3 or 4 years, I would like to see an incandescent match that.
